11 Things You should Know
Welcome to Quinta Camarena, your perfect retreat off the beaten track in the heart of Cercal do Alentejo. Nestled amidst the natural beauty of Portugal’s countryside, our location offers a peaceful escape from the fast pace of modern life. While you’ll enjoy serenity, stunning hiking trails, and a unique local experience, it’s important to know that we embrace simplicity—meaning some of the comforts you may be accustomed to might not be found here. From getting here to adjusting to a slower rhythm, this guide will help you prepare for your stay in this hidden gem.
01
Alentejo moves at a different rhythm
In Alentejo, time moves differently. Life here unfolds at a slower, more deliberate pace, where things aren’t rushed but savored. From service at local cafés to the rhythm of daily life, patience is part of the charm. Embracing this slower tempo is not only part of the experience but also key to truly connecting with the region’s culture. At Quinta Camarena, adjusting to this pace is part of your journey—allowing you to fully unwind and appreciate the simplicity of life in Alentejo.
02
The property itself is a hike
Quinta Camarena is nestled into a scenic hillside, with much of the property spread across different levels of the valley. While the terraced landscape adds to the charm, it does mean navigating slopes and steps, which may be challenging for those with mobility issues, recent knee surgeries, or if you’re not up for a spontaneous glute workout.
03
Shit happens
Some things are beyond our control and letting go of expectations is an important part of vacation. Even though the weather is mostly heavenly, it sometimes rains. There's a chance your flight will be late or even cancelled, and you may lose precious vacation time. Sometimes the ocean can be rougher than expected or the waves too small to surf. That being said, you’ll more likely have one of the most epic stays of your life.
04
Food is special
We take great pride in our food here. You'll be served by our chef who sources locally and seasonally. Although we mostly serve vegetarian, fish and meat can sometimes be an option. We start with the offerings from our own garden and then expand to farmers in the area.
05
The staff is here to help
Most guests rave about our staff. They're chosen for their authentic kindness, strong work ethic, and willingness to go the extra mile for guests. Since we aim to hire from local neighborhoods, some of our team members are working in the hospitality industry for the first time. If they lack in experience, they tend to overcompensate with genuine care.
06
Activities at your own risk
We offer a variety of activities and things to do. From Yoga, hiking along the coastal cliffs, surfing and horseback riding. We want you to have tons of fun but know that you'll be doing these at your own risk.
07
Sustainability is key
We do our best to be as sustainable as possible. By locally sourcing our food, and using solar energy for hot water and electricity. So please keep this in mind when using electronic devices, turning off lights when not needed and understanding these things require a little more attention than usual.
08
Tipping is appropriate
At Quinta Camarena, tipping (suggested 10eur day) is warmly welcomed as a way to show our staff that their efforts have made your stay special. While not required, gratuities are always appreciated, as they reflect your gratitude for the care and hospitality provided during your visit. It’s a meaningful gesture that makes a big difference to our dedicated team.
09
We are near a small town
Cercal do Alentejo is a charming small village, where big name conveniences like Starbucks or shopping centers won’t be found. Instead of seeking the familiar, we encourage you to embrace the change, try something new, and go with the flow. Whether it’s enjoying a local café or exploring the village shops, this adventure offers the perfect chance to connect with the authentic spirit of the Alentejo region.
10
We have Hi-speed internet
Although we recommend you take advantage of your visit at Quinta Camarena to disconnect from digital life, if you require a reliable internet connection, it will be available in all rooms, Camtina (common area), and The Ground (yoga studio).
